International Day of education

Education is a fundamental human right, a common benefit, and a civic duty. In honor of education's contribution to peace and development, the United Nations General Assembly declared January 24 to be the International Day of Education.

Countries will not succeed in attaining gender equality and ending the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth, and adults behind without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for everyone. 771 million individuals worldwide are illiterate, while 244 million children and teenagers are not in school. It is outrageous that their right to an education is being infringed upon. The moment has come to reform schooling.

2023 festivities and theme

"To invest in people, emphasize education" will be the topic of the fifth International Day of Education, which will be observed on January 24, 2023. The UN Transforming Education Summit in September 2022 gave rise to a worldwide movement, and this year's Day will advocate for preserving that momentum while outlining how to put commitments and international initiatives into practice. Education must be prioritized to accelerate progress toward all the Sustainable Development Goals against the backdrop of a global recession, growing inequalities, and the climate crisis.

UNESCO is dedicating this year's International Day to girls and women in Afghanistan who have been deprived of their right to education. It is calling for the immediate lifting of the ban restricting their access to education.
